Super Bowl Spirit Mass
Jan 31st, 2015 by Father Chris

I invite all of the young people of our parish to our annual Parish Super Bowl Family Mass which will be celebrated tomorrow (Sunday February 1st) at 10:30 AM in Church.  I also invite you to come to Mass wearing your favorite sports team jersey. At this Mass the homily will be geared toward the youth and also will incorporate some aspects of fair play, good sportsmanship and the super bowl into God’s Word and the Scripture readings for this Sunday and God calls us to live our lives as His faithful people.

Also, I have a special gift for each of the young people who come to this Mass tomorrow to take home to enjoy and use during the super bowl.  I hope to see everyone tomorrow at 10:30 for the Family Mass.

Blizzard Alert!
Jan 26th, 2015 by Father Chris

As this strong winter storm approaches I would like to encourage all parishioners as strongly as possible to heed the advice of local authorities and stay home from this evening until it is safe to walk and travel.  For this reason, I advise that parishioners do not attempt to walk or drive to morning Mass tomorrow (Tuesday) and even possibly Wednesday depending on conditions.  Safety must be our utmost concern.  Forecasters are calling for up to 2 feet of snow in some areas with high winds overnight which is likely to create high snow drifts in some areas.  S.T.A.R.S. Religious Education Classes for Monday evening and Tuesday evening have been cancelled and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament scheduled for Wednesday has also been cancelled.  The Parish Office will likely re-open on Wednesday afternoon at the earliest.  Please stay inside and stay safe during this Blizzard of 2015.

This graphic shows the wind impacts in the Northeastern United States.

I took this photo a short time ago on a nearby road.  The Blizzard Warning starts at 5 pm today.

This graphic tells what some of the impacts from the blizzard are likely to be over the next 24 to 36 hours.

I have set up this sophisticated meteorological measuring device to try to gauge the actual amount of snow which accumulates here during the storm.

Welcome Father Villa
Jan 14th, 2015 by Father Chris

Welcome Father Villa!

We are happy  to announce that beginning on January 4th Father James Villa, O.F.M., will assist us here at Saint Anthony’s with certain Sunday Masses especially at 12 noon and 10:30 am.

Many of you will remember Father Villa as the presenter of our Lenten Mission a couple of years ago.  He has also been with us for other events over the years.

Father Villa has been assisting at several other parishes in the Archdiocese recently.  However, due to changes brought about by the “Making All Things New” Pastoral Planning Initiative he is in need of a new parish where he can serve on Sundays.  Father Villa is a much loved and admired priest in the Archdiocese of New York as well as the Franciscan Community and we are very fortunate to have his presence here at Saint Anthony’s.

We are happy to welcome Father Villa as a Weekend Associate and we look forward to his ministry among us.  Please be sure to welcome Father Villa when you see him and make him feel right at home.

Novena for Life
Jan 14th, 2015 by Father Chris

Rose for life

Next Thursday, January 22nd, marks the 41st anniversary of the tragic Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion on demand in the United States.  As a parish we gather our prayers and efforts together this week as we pray for the full restoration of the legal guarantee for the right to life in our country.  We encourage parishioners to travel to Washington D.C. for the annual March for Life if possible.  However, if this is not possible please join us on Wednesday here in church from 8:30am to 6:00pm to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament.  A Rosary for Life will be prayed at 2:30pm and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3:00pm in reparation for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.

We also encourage parishioners to join in the Nine Day Novena of Prayer for Life which is underway and which will continue until January 22nd.

Finally, I once again renew the commitment of our parish to assist with whatever resources are necessary any pregnant woman who comes to us in need so that she and her child may be helped and life preserved for both.  We pledge our full support, love and care with confidentiality and with no judgment in this regard.  May our prayerful efforts bear fruit in the years to come so that Jesus’ wish for all people might come to fulfillment “that we may have life and have it to the full!”

If you would like to attend the March for Life in Washington D.C. this Thursday please go to www.NYFamilyLife.org for a list of locations in the Archdiocese where buses will be departing from or for more information call 212-371-1000 and ask for the Family Life Office.

This evening Father George and I were delighted to be at the Ceremony of the Installation of Officers for the West Harrison Fire Department.  This was the 8th year I have served as Chaplain for the Fire Department and so my 8th Installation Ceremony.  I am always so happy to be with all of our firefighters and any way we can be of support to them I am happy to assist.

Congratulations to all of the new officers as well as the outgoing officers who have done such a wonderful job over the last year.   We look forward to another exciting and busy year ahead.
